This species is part of the extremely difficult circumpolar E. palustris complex- the taxonomic status of E. ambigens is problematic; perhaps better included within a more broadly circumscribed E. uniglumis.
E. ambigens has been reported from unspecified localities in Connecticut and New Jersey; but no definitive specimens have been seen.
